Chuquisaca

Chuquisaca, (i. e. Bridge of Gold), is the alternative name of Sucre the capital of Bolivia. The name Chuquisaca was officially renamed Sucre in 1839. Chuquisaca was an old Peruvian town, and it was on that site the Spaniards founded the new city in 1538 under the name Ciudad de la Plata de la Nueva Toledo (City of Silver of New Toledo). La Plata remained its alternative name thereafter until the 19th century serving as the judicial, religious and cultural centre of the region. The original name was much in use during the independence movement (1809-1825), and thereafter even though La Plata was proclaimed provisional capital of the newly independent Upper Peru (later, Bolivia) in July 1826. The Bolivian seat of government was moved from Sucre to La Paz in 1898, though Sucre remained the capital city. Sucre also headquarters the department of Chuquisaca. It is located in a sheltered plain 9000 ft. above the sea-level. It is a cathedral city. It has a mild climate.
