Clorinda
Clorinda, according to a tradition, was a female Saracen knight sent against the Crusaders during the first crusade 1096-1099. The Christian knight Tancred who had fallen in love with her challenged her and slew on an encounter at night. Only thereafter he recognised who she was. Before dying she received Christian baptism at his hands. Her story is told in Tasso's 1581 poem "Jerusalem Delivered" and in Claudio Monteverdi's opera Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda first performed in 1624 in Venice.Nearby pages
