Commission

Commission is a name given to either a constitutional or legal body, appointed by the state or court. A state appoints a commission to conduct certain tasks, such as an Election Commission to conduct elections, or to study certain issues and recommend appropriate measures such as Law Commission. However, a court appoints a commission to ascertain or investigate facts needed to decide a case. A commission is usually given specific terms of reference. Members of a commission have been chosen from amongst experts, academics, social activists/workers, advocates, judges and others. Costs of the commission are usually borne by the State. Such commissions have often been appointed in PILs.

In insurance sector, a commission is a fee paid to an agent or insurance salesperson as a percentage of the policy premium. The percentage varies widely depending on coverage, the insurer and the marketing methods.
