Comoro Isles
Comoro Isles is an archipelago of four volcanic islands at the North of the channel of Mozambique. It was under the protectorate of France since 1886. In 1946, France redefined the Comoros as a French overseas territory. However, in 1974, France organized a referendum for self-determination in the archipelago. Except in Mayotte, the population voted overwhelmingly in favour of independence. Thereafter, three of the islands - Ngazidja (also known as Grande Comore), Ndzuwani (also known as Anjouan), and Mwali (also known as Mohéli) form the Union of the Comoros, a sovereign nation, while Mayotte (also known as Maore) belongs to France. The people in the isle are predominantly Mohammedans, and speak Arabic.Nearby pages
