Damaraland

Damaraland is a historical region in Namibia. It was a territory on the West coast of South Africa, North of Namaqualand. It was bordered roughly by Ovamboland in the north, the Namib Desert in the west, the Kalahari Desert in the east, and the Windhoek region in the south. The chief industry was pastoral. The mountain districts, which are rich in minerals, particularly copper, were inhabited by Damaras, who were nomads and cattle-rearers.

It became a German protectorate in 1890, later came under South African control, and in 1989 became independent under the name Namibia.
