DAMARALAND

DAMARALAND, now Namibia, was a territory on the W. coast of South Africa, N. of Namaqualand; the chief industry is pastoral; the mountain districts, which are rich in minerals, particularly copper, are inhabited by Damaras, who are nomads and cattle-rearers.

It became a German protectorate in 1890. It later came under South African control, and in 1989 became independent.
