Dancing mania

Dancing mania was an epidemic of frequent occurrence, especially in German towns, during the Middle Ages, of the nature of hysteria, showing itself in convulsive movements beyond the control of the will, and in delirious acts, sometimes violently suicidal. The earliest-known outbreak of dancing mania occurred in the 7th century, but the most signal occurrence of the mania was at Aix-la-Chapelle in July 1374. The plague first hit Aix-la-Chapelle on June 24, 1374. Later it spread throughout Europe. It appears to have completely died out by the mid-17th century.
