Delhi

Delhi is a state in India headquartered in Delhi city from which it derives its name. Delhi city is situated on the banks of the Yamuna. It is now the National Capital Territory of India. Technically, Delhi is a Union Territory with an assembly. Delhi is not a full-fledged state, and therefore all the state subjects do not come within its jurisdiction, such as police, land etc.

Now, Delhi (the National Capital Territory of Delhi) is a Union Territory of India with an assembly of its own. It is now governed more or less as a state of India, despite the fact that it still a UT. New Delhi area is excluded from its control. New Delhi, the National Capital of India, has a different governance setup under the control of the Union Government. However, in the assembly, people of the New Delhi area are also represented. Delhi state has an area of about 1,483 sq kms. Its population is 13,850,507 as per the census 2001. Delhi is its capital. Its principal languages are Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu and English.

History and Geography

Delhi finds prominent reference right from the times of the epic Mahabharata. Its control passed from one ruler/dynasty to another, beginning with the Mauryas, Pallavas, Guptas of Central India, and then to the Turk and Afghan during the 13th to 15th centuries, and finally to the Mughals in the 16th century.

It then became the capital of the Mogul empire and the centre of the Mohammedan power in India. It was then a great centre of trade and commerce,

It contains the famous palace of Shah Jahan, and the Jama Masjid, which occupies the heart of the city, and is the largest and finest mosque in India, which owes its origin to Shah Jahan. Old Delhi is basically a walled city and is 51 miles in circumference, most of it is now in ruins. It was once divided into Hindu, Mohammedan, and European quarters. It was captured by Lord Lake in 1803, and during the Mutiny by the Sepoys, but after a siege of seven days retaken in 1857, and it became the capital of British India.

It was In the latter half of the 18th century and early 19th century, the British rule was established in Delhi. In 1911, Delhi became the centre of all activities after the capital was shifted from Kolkata. It was made a Union Territory in 1956. After independence of India, Delhi became the capital city, and the New Delhi became its Headquarters or the capital.

Lying in the northern part of the country, Delhi is surrounded by Haryana on all sides except the east, where it borders with Uttar Pradesh. The 69th Constitutional amendment is a milestone in Delhi's history, as it got a Legislative Assembly with the enactment of the National Capital Territory Act, 1991.

There are 7 Lok Sabha and 70 Vidhan Sabha Constituencies in the state.
