The district is located between 26 degree & 28 degree north lattitude and 83 degree & 85 degree east longitude out of which district Kushinagar was created in 1994 by taking north & east portion of Deoria district. It is surrounded by district Kushinagar in North, district Gopalganj and Siwan(Bihar state) in East, district Mau & district Ballia in south and district Gorakhpur in West.

The district derives its name from its headquarter town of the same name.

Currently, Deoria district has five tehsils namely Deoria sadar, Salempur, Rudrapur, Berhaj & Bhatparrani.

History

History of Deoria is traced back to ancient era of 'Koshal', a prime centre of ancient
'arya culture' surrounded by Himalaya in the north, Shyandika river in the south, 'Panchal' in the west and Maghadh in the east.

The stories and the ancient coins, idols, bricks, temples etc clearly indicate its ancient but a developed and organised society.

Ancient history of the district is related with the Ramayan era when 'Koshal Naresh' lord Ram appointed his son 'Kush', the king of Kushawati, which is now known as Kushinagar.

Before Mahabharat era, this area was related with Chakravarty Samrat 'Mahasudtsan' and his kingdom 'Kushinagar' was well developed and prosperous. Nearby to his rajya was the thick forest 'Mahavan'.

This area was under control of Maurya rulers, Gupta rulers, Bhar rulers , and then under Gharwal ruler 'Govind Chandra'. Govind Chandra ruled between 1114 and 1154.

This area came under Avadh rulers Muslim rulers during Medieval period, but they had little control over the area. There was little control of oldest Delhi rulers - Sultan, Nizam or Khilji's on this region. There is no description of this area being under war/attack/invasion.

Deoria played a very important role in modern history of India.

The district came into existence on March 16, 1946 by carving out of Gorakhpur district.

The name DEORIA is believed to have been derived from 'Devaranya' or probably 'Devpuria'. The term deoria means a place where there are temples.
