Dev Prayag is in Uttarakhand state of India. It is one of the Panch Prayags and a famous place of pilgrimage. It is sutuated at about 71 kms from Rishikesh at the confluence of the holy rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi. These make the Ganga river downstream. In the Skand Puran, this place is described as the place of tap (meditation and worship) of a Brahman named Devsharma. It is said that he spent thounsand years in Satyayug pryaing Lord Vishnu and got a boon to have a view of the Lord. This place derives its name from the name of the Brahman. He was told to stay at this place to have a look of Lord Ram in Treta Yug when he would come to this place after defeating Ravan and attaining victory of Lanka. The religious importance of this place is described in the Kedarkhand chapter of Skand puran in the form of dialogue between the King Dharmnetra and the sage Utfalak. There are many other streams. Six important abodes of Lord Shiv are also there. Dashrathanchal Parvat is there. There is also a temple of Raghunath ji. Devotees come here to offer water to their ancestors, a ritual performed after death of a person.
