Dewas
Dewas is a district in the State of Madhya Pradesh in India. The district derives its name from the town of the same name which is also its heaquarters. It is located between between 20º17' and 23º20' North latitude and 75º54' and 77º08' East longitude. It lies on the Malawa plateau.Devas district is bounded to the east by Sehore District, to the south by the Harda and Khandwa districts, to the west by the Khargone and Indore districts, and to the north by the Ujjain and Shajapur districts.
The district has an area of 7,020 sq km with a a population of 1,306,617 as per census 2001.
The district is now divided into 6 tahsils viz. Sonkatch, Dewas, Bagli, Kannod, Tonk-Khurd and Khategaon.
History
The district is famous from ancient days, and there are many stories relating to the legendary king Vikramaditya associated with this place.Consequent upon the merger of princely States and the formation of Madhya Bharat State in 1948, the present district came into existence and the boundaries were redrawn. With the reorganization of States on linguistic basis on 1st November 1956, Madhya Bharat, with other territories got merged to form the New state of Madhya Pradesh and thus Dewas continues to be one of the districts in it.
