Esthonia
Esthonia, the current spelling Estonia, officially the Republic of Estonia, is a country in Northern Europe. It has a northern foreshore on the Gulf of Finland, and on the West it abuts on the Baltic. It was declared independent in 1918, when it was one of the Russian Baltic provinces, and the country was free from forest and marsh, chiefly agricultural, but fishing was also an important industry. The people were a composite of Finns and immigrant Germans, with latterly Russians superimposed. During 1940–1991 it again came under German and Soviet occupation, but its independence was ultimately restored on 20 August 1991.Nearby pages
