Etah

Etah is a district in the State of Uttar Pradesh in India. The district lies between the parallels of 27°18' and 28°2' North latitude and 78°11' and 79°17' East longitude. It is bounded on the north by the Kasganj district, on the west by district of Aligarh, Hathras, Mathura and Agra, on the south by Mainpuri and Firozabad, on the east by Farrukhabad.

According to the 2011 census Etah district had a population of 1,761,152.

History

The district excluding Jalesar tehsil was part of Madhyakdesh or Madhyadesh described in ancient texts. When Madhyadesh was divided into Kuru, Panchal and Vats, the area came under Panchal. In the Mahabharat era, when Panchal was further divided and came under South Panchal ruled by Drupad. After Kampilya, the area came under Mahoday Rajya with Kannauj as its capital. During Buddha era, it was part of Panchal Mahajanpad. It came under rules of Chandragupt (345-228 BC), Ashok (273-233 BC), Shung (85-73 BC), and Kushan(AD 76-176).

Nag dynasty rulers also ruled the area during 200-350 and Kumargupt about 415. In 1018, at the time of invasion by Mahmood Gaznavi, it was being ruled by king of Kannauj, who was killed by Chandel king Vidyadhar on account of his being making agreement with Mahmood Gaznavi. During medieval period it came under Muslim rule.

The Janpad came under British in mid 18th century.
