Exposure assessment

Exposure assessment is the process of finding out how people come into contact with a hazardous substance, how often and for how long they are in contact with the substance, and how much of the substance they are in contact with. It also estimates the amount of a chemical that enters or comes into contact with people or animals. An exposure assessment also describes the nature and size of a population exposed to a chemical.

Accurate exposure assessment is a challenge in almost every observational study. During the past years the methods for occupational exposure assessment have greatly developed, including approaches based on modelling of occupational hygiene data, expert's exposure ratings, or specific questionnaires. Biological markers may also provide valuable information for occupational exposure assessment.
