FRANCIS RAWDON CHESNEY

FRANCIS RAWDON CHESNEY (1798-1872), explorer, born in co. Down, Ireland; explored with much labour the route to India by way of the Euphrates, though his labours were rendered futile by the opposition of Russia; proved, by survey of the isthmus, the practicability of the Suez Canal.
