Frankfort-on-the-Oder

Frankfort-on-the-Oder is a German city in the province of Brandenburg, 51 miles South-East of Berlin. It is a well-built city and has a university incorporated with Breslau in 1811, and is actively engaged in the manufacture of machinery, chemicals, paper, &c. In 13th century, it was a West Slavic settlement, thereafter it was successively became part of the Kingdom of Poland, the Margraviate of Brandenburg, the Bohemian Crown, Prussia, and finally Germany. It was split into two after World War II, the eastern part became again part of Poland and renamed Słubice, while the western part became a border city of the German Democratic Republic in 1949.
