Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a promontory of rock, a British overseas territory in the South of Spain, about 2 square miles, 3 miles (5 km) long and 0.75 mile (1.2 km) wide, and over 1400 ft. in height, connected with the mainland by a spit of sandy isthmus that is 1 mile (1.6 km) long, forming a strong fortress, with a town of the name at the foot of it on the West side, and with the Strait of Gibraltar on the South, which at its narrowest is 15 miles broad. The rock above the town is a network of batteries, mounted with heavy cannon, and the town itself is a trade entrepĂ´t for North Africa. The rock has been held as a stronghold by the British since 1704.
