Giuseppe Mezzofanti

Giuseppe Mezzofanti (1774-1849), full name Giuseppe Gasparo Mezzofanti, was an Italian cardinal and linguist, born at Bologna. He was celebrated for the number of languages he knew, some 58 in all. He lived chiefly in Rome, and was keeper of the Vatican library. Byron called him "a walking polyglot".
