GODAVARI
Godavari is an important river of India. It is the second longest river in India after the Ganga, and the longest in South India. It is one of the 12 sacred rivers of India, and once in 12 years a bathing festival is celebrated on its banks. The devotees believe that a dip into the river washes away the sins.It rises on the east side of the Western Ghâts and traverses in a southeast direction the entire Deccan, and forming a large delta, falls into the Bay of Bengal by seven mouths after a course of 900 m (1465 km). Its mighty volume of water supplies irrigating and navigable canals for the whole Deccan.
The river is widest in Rajahmundry town which is located on its bank. Its width is about 5 kilometres from Rajahmundry to the other side, where Kovvur is located.
