Gomukh is in Uttarakhand state of India. It is the source of Bhagirathi, a name of the holy river Ganga. It is a glacier. This Gangotri glacier is situated in the North - East at about a distance of 18 kms from Gangotri itself. Gomukh is considered to be a place of pilgrimage where devotee aspire for a dip into the cold water. It is located at a height of 4255 metres above sea level. It is about 24 kms in length and 6 - 8 kms in width. On the way to Gomukh from Gangotri, there is a beautiful place Chirbasa in the mid way at about 9 kms from Gangotri. It is famous for Devdar trees. Bhojbasa is another important place en route. It is at about 14 kms from Gangotri. The place derives its name from the Bhoj trees (Birch trees). In ancient days the skins of these trees are used for writing on it. These are called Bhojpatra. Many of the scriptures of India were written on such Bhojpatras. Where mankind had not invented paper, these Bhojpatras were the main means of preserving the wisdom and knowledge.
