Great Vowel Shift

Great vowel shift is a historical phenomena of the 15th century England. It was the period when pronunciation of long vowels gradually changed.

With this Great Vowel shift many words of Middle English changed their sounds and finally with the change done by printers many words were changed in spellings. This resulted into a large number of exception to the spelling rules in English.
