Gregory XIII

Gregory XIII (1502 – 1585), also Pope Gregory XIII, born Ugo Boncompagni, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States, born in Bologna. He was skilled in canon law. He distinguished himself in the Council of Trent, and by his zeal against the Protestants. He celebrated the Bartholomew Massacre by public thanksgivings in Rome, and reformed the calendar, which later came to be known as the Gregorian calendar.
