Gurramkonda
Gurramkonda is a hill-fort town in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh in India. It has historical importance from the time of the Vijayanagara Empire, the rulers of which had made it a fort town for their kingdom especially under King Sree Krishna Deva Raya. It derives its name from the fact that the rulers used to ride horses (Gurram) to reach their palace at the top of the steep hill (Konda). There was a time when the town used to be known as Zafarabad. It is said that there were over 40 mosques in the town. Today, they are not extant.
It is claimed that a Sufi saint, Hazrat Shah Kamal, came from Persia and settled in Gurramkonda.
It also houses the mausoleum of Tipu Sultan's maternal uncle, Maqbeera, similar to most of the Islamic tombs built in India. This tomb is called Maqbeera Tomb.
The people of the area believe the lore which states that a large deposit of diamonds and precious rocks were spread by the king across the hill when the kingdom was attacked. It is largely believed by the local people that the treasure thus hidden around the foot of the hill are even now lying hidden there.
