Hapamuni is in Gumla district of Jharkhand in India. It is a famous ancient village situated in Ghaghara block at about 12 km from the block headquarter. This village is synonymous with Mahamaya temple which was constructed by Gajghat Ray, the 22nd king of Nag dynasty and the son of Raja Mohan Ray. He ruled between 869 to 905 AD . He handed over the caring of the temple to his Guru Harinath, a Rashtrakuta (Marathi) Brahmin. In 1391, Raja Shivdas Karn got an image of Lord Vishnu established there. According to songs of Virmu Ram and Ranchi Gazetteer, the old temple was destroyed during KOLH REBEL against the DIKU. However, it would be a mistake to say that the local tribals were against this temple on account of their religion. This temple was not made by any outsider whom they used to call Diku (a person who make troubles for them) but by the Nag kingdom of Chhotanagpur. It was only a handiwork of some indisciplined rebellion.
