Hastings Kamuzu Banda

Hastings Kamuzu Banda (1906-1997) was a Malawian statesman who became prime minister in 1964 and the first president of the Republic of Malawi in 1966. He remained president until 1994. The country remained under his autocratic rule until he was defeated in an election he had agreed to hold under international and domestic pressure. He died in South Africa on 25 November 1997.
