Heidelberg

Heidelberg is a celebrated German city, in the State of Baden-Württemberg, situated amid beautiful surroundings, on the Neckar, 13 miles South-East of Mannheim. It has many interesting buildings, including ruins of a splendid 13th-century castle, but is chiefly celebrated for its flourishing university, founded in 1386, Germany's oldest and one of Europe's most reputable universities, whose professoriate has included many of the most distinguished German scholars. It had about 29,000 students in 2024. It was long the centre of Calvinism. Its chief trade is in books, tobacco, wine, and beer.
