Henry Essex Edgeworth

Henry Essex Edgeworth (1745-1807), also known as L'Abbé Edgeworth de Firmont, or simply the "Abbé" Edgeworth, was an Irish Catholic priest, born in Ireland, son of a Protestant clergyman. He was educated at the Sorbonne, in Paris. He entered the priesthood, and became the confessor of Louis XVI, whom he attended on the scaffold. He exclaimed as the guillotine came down, "Son of St. Louis, ascend to heaven!" and soon after he left France. He was subsequently chaplain to Louis XVIII.
