The history of Seraikela is not fully known due to lack of authentic records of ancient era. We know about its history mostly from the medieval era. However, it can be said about Seraikela that it had to undego rise and fall, politically and otherwise. Seraikela rose to the status of a state in the year 1620. Kumar Bikram Singh I, the third Maharaja Jagannath Singh, established the Seraikela state. It remained a state until India became independent in 1947. It was merged with Bihar state after independence and ranked as subdivision merged with the boundaries of the then Kharsawan state. Later, in 1950, the states of India was reorganised and in this process 39 villages of Chandil, Nimdih and Tamar area were included into it. Seraikela is important for music and dance. Seraikela Chhau dance is world famous. After after the formation of Jharkhand state in November 2000, which was carved out of Bihar, Seraikela became a district of Jharkhand.
