Hong-Kong

Hong-Kong is an island lying off the mouth of the Canton River, South China. It is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.

It is hilly and unproductive, but is well watered and tolerably healthy; it owes its great importance as a commercial centre to its favourable position, its magnificent harbour, and to its having been made a free port and the head-quarters of the European banks; opium is the chief import, silk and tea the principal exports; Victoria, a handsome city on the N. side.

It was ceded to Britain in 1842 and was the capital, seat of the British governor, &c. It was occupied by Japan during The Second World War (1941–45), after which the British resumed control until 1997. As a result of the negotiations and the 1984 agreement between China and Britain, Hong Kong was handed over to the People's Republic of China and became its first Special Administrative Region on 1 July 1997.
