Irkutsk
Irkutsk was a central Siberian province, separated from China by the Sayan Mountains. It has Lake Baikal on the East, Yenisei and Yakutsk on the West and North. It was a rich pastoral country, watered by the navigable rivers Angara and the Lena, agriculture, cattle rearing were prosperous industries. It was famous for gold, iron, and salt mines. About one-third of the population were forced colonists. Its capital city, Irkutsk, was the seat of government for Eastern Siberia, an ecclesiastical centre, and the chief emporium of commerce. It was the finest city in Siberia. Presently, it is the largest city and administrative center of Irkutsk Oblast, Russia.Nearby pages
