Isabella I (1451-1504)

Isabella I, also known as Isabella the Catholic, was queen of Castile during 1474-1504 and of Aragon during 1479-1504.

She was married to Ferdinand of Aragon in 1469. The couple brought stability to the kingdoms that became the basis for unification of Spain.

In 1478, they instituted the Spanish Inquisition.

In 1492, they supported Christopher Columbus in his explorations in the sea.

They are known for completing the Reconquista, ordering conversion or exile of their Muslim and Jewish subjects. Isabella was granted the title Servant of God by the Catholic Church in 1974.
