Jean-Bertrand Aristide

Jean-Bertrand Aristide (1953- ) was president of Haiti in 1991 and during 1994-96, and 2001-04. He is known for leading a movement against dictatorship of Duvalier in the 1980s. Though he was elected president of the country in 1990, he was forced into exile by a military coup, which ruled Haiti until 1994 when US troops facilitated his return. He then served as president during 1994-96, and again 2001-04, but he was again forced into exile.
