JOANNUS DAMASCENUS, theologian and hymn-writer, born at Damascus; was a zealous defender of image-worship; was said to have had his right hand chopped off by the machinations of his foes, which was afterwards
restored to him by the Virgin; d. 754, at the age of 70.
