Johann Christoph Gottsched

Johann Christoph Gottsched (1700-1766) was a German literary notability, born near Königsberg, professor of philosophy and belles-lettres at Leipzig. Throughout his life, he was the literary dictator of Germany. He did much to vindicate the rights and protect the purity of the German tongue, as well as to improve the drama, but he wrote and patronised a style of writing that was cold, stiff, and soulless.
