Johann Heinrich Alfred Escher

Johann Heinrich Alfred Escher (1819-1882), also Johann Heinrich Alfred Escher vom Glas, simply known as Alfred Escher, was Swiss statesman, born at Zurich. He was bred for the law, and lectured for a while in his native town. Later, he became President of the Council of Zurich. He co-operated with Farrer in expelling the Jesuits. He also became member of the Diet. He supported Federal union, and did much to promote and establish State education in Switzerland.
