John Martin
John Martin (1789-1854) was an English painter, born near Hexham. He was an artist of an ardent temperament and extraordinary imaginative power. His paintings, the first "Sadak in Search of the Waters of Oblivion," characterised as "sublime" and "gorgeous," were 16 in number, and made a great impression when produced. Engravings of some of them are familiar, such as the "Fall of Babylon" and "Belshazzar's Feast".Nearby pages
