John of Salisbury
John of Salisbury (1120-1180) was an English bishop of Chartres, born at Salisbury, of Saxon lineage. He was a pupil of Abelard. He was secretary first to Theobald and then to Thomas รก Becket, archbishop of Canterbury. He was present at the assassination of the latter, and afterwards he retired to France and was made bishop. He wrote the Lives of St. Thomas and St. Anselm, and other works of importance in connection with the scholasticism of the time.Nearby pages
