Jose Figueres

Jose Figueres (1906-1990), full name José María Hipólito Figueres Ferrer, was a Costa Rican soldier and politician. He revolted against dictatorial president and undemocratic traditions. He was also known as architect of liberal democracy in Costa Rica. Jose served as president thrice 1948–1949, 1953–1958 and 1970–1974. He abolished the army and initiated social reforms. His son José María Figueres was also President of Costa Rica from 1994 to 1998.
