Josef Israëls

Josef Israëls (1824 - 1911) was a Dutch oil and water-colour artist and etcher, born in Gröningen. He studied in Amsterdam and Paris. He devoted himself to genre subjects, and depicted the pathetic side of the life of the Dutch fisher-folks with great sympathy and power. He won a grand prix at the Paris Exhibition of 1889.
