Joseph Fouché

Joseph Fouché (1763-1820) was Duke of Otranto, born at Nantes, a member of the National Convention, and voted for the death of Louis XVI. He became Minister of Police under Napoleon. Falling into disfavour, was sent into exile, but recalled to Paris in 1814. He advised Napoleon to abdicate at that time and again after Waterloo. Fouché also served under Louis XVIII for a time, but was obliged at length to quit France for good. He died at Trieste.
