The first Danish paper, Den Danske Mercurius, was founded in 1666 by the Crown to publish official bulletins and to laud the king and the government. Press censorship existed until 1849.

There are four Danish newspapers of eighteenth century are still extant. Among them Berlingske Tidende was launched in 1749, Aalborg Stiftstidende was founded in 1767, Fyens Stiftstidende was started in 1772 , and Aarhus Stiftstidende was introduced in the market in 1794.
