The printing press came in Poland in the mid-15th century from Germany. However, the first newspaper the weekly Merkurjusz Polski (Polish Mercury) appeared in 1661 in Krakow. It was suppressed and the successive publication either did not survive for long time.

The newspapers slowly emerged out of official suppression. Kurjer Warsawski and Kurjer Polski of Krakow were launched in 1729. Both the papers survived for a longer period than their predecessors. However, the real growth of newspaper in Poland came after adoption of a new constitution in 1791.
