Kalahandi

Kalahandi is a district in the State of Orissa in India. It has an area of 7920 sq km and population 1335494 as per census 2001. It is located at 19.3° N and 21.5° N latitudes and 82.20° E and 83.47° E longitudes. The district is bounded in the North by the Balangir district and Nuapada district, to the South by the Nabarangpur district, Koraput district and Rayagada district, and to the East by the Rayagada district, Kandhamal district and Boudh district.

There are two sub-divisions, 9 tehsils, 13 blocks, 273 gram panchayats, and 2236 villages out of which 137 are uninhabited.

History

Kalahandi's history dates back from stone age. It had a glorious past and great civilization.

It was a princely state in British India. After independence it was merged with Orissa as Kalahandi district. Nuapada district was carved out of Kalahandi in 1993.

In 1967, Kashipur block from Kalahandi district was transferred to Rayagada district for administrative reason.
