!Karbi Anglong District
Karbi Anglong is a district in the state of Assam in India. Its earlier name was Mikir Hills district which was created in 1970. However, Mikir Hills district was rechristened as 'Karbi Anglong District' w.e.f the 14th October 1976. It is situated between 25° 33' N to 26° 35' N Latitude and 92° 10' to 93° 50' E Longitude, in the central part of the state. Its Head quarter is at Diphu, located at about 172 km from Guwahati. The district enjoys autonomy under the provision of Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
It is bounded by Golaghat district in the east, Meghalaya and Morigaon district in the west, Nagaon and Golaghat district in the north and N.C. Hills district and Nagaland in the south.
The largest district of Assam, Karbi Anglong occupies an area of 10,434 sq km. Population of the district as per census 2011 was 965280. This large and charming hill district in the centre of Assam with its diversely rare flora and fauna has remained untouched and undiscovered.
The district has three sub-divisions: Diphu, Hamren and Bokajan. The population of the district is predominantly tribal. The Karbis are the major local tribe who gives the district its present name. The Karbis are divided into three groups namely 'Chinthong', 'Ronghang' and 'Amri'.
The district has dense tropical forest covered hills and flat plains.
