Khilji or Khalji dynasty was founded by Jalal-ud-din Khilji who was elected by the nobles of Delhi Court after the murder of Qaiquabad in 1290.
Following the death of Ghayasuddin Balban, the Sultanate became weak and there were number of revolts.
This was the period when the nobles placed Jalal-ud-din Khilji on the throne. This marked the beginning of Khilji dynasty. The rule of this dynasty started in 1290 AD.
Ala-ud-din Khilji , a nephew of Jalal-ud-din Khilji hatched a conspiracy and got Sultan Jalal-ud-din killed and proclaimed himself as the Sultan in 1296. Ala-ud-din Khilji was the first Muslim ruler whose empire covered almost whole of India up to its extreme south. He fought many battles, conquered Gujarat, Ranthambhor, Chittor, Malwa, and Deccan. During his reign of 20 years, Mongols invaded the country several times but were successfully repulsed. From these invasion Alla-ud-din Khilji learnt the lessons of keeping himself prepared, by fortifying and organizing his armed forces. Alla-ud-din died in 1316 AD, and with his death, the Khilji dynasty came to an end.
Ala-ud-din was an ambitious ruler who thought of conquering the world and establishing a new religion. He had even adopted the title Alexander II.
His invasion and siege of Chittor is well known historical event. He was infatuated for Rani Padmini.
It was during his reign, ''Padmawat'' was composed by the famous poet Malik Mohammed Jayasi.
His general Malik Kafur conducted the southern campaigns and even went up to Rameswaram.
He was the first Muslim ruler to give a systematic revenue system.
Amir Khusro was his court poet.
He is also known for economic reform that fixed and enforced low prices for all commodities.
