Khyber Pass

Khyber Pass is a narrow defile 33 mile long, in one place only 10 ft. wide, through not lofty but precipitous mountains connecting Afghanistan and Pakistan, and India cutting through the northeastern part of the Spin Ghar mountains.

It lies to the North-West of Peshawur. It was the chief route between the Punjab and Afghanistan and was the scene of a British catastrophe in the war of 1839-42. It became under British control in 1879 that ended in 1947.
