Kishanganj
Kishanganj is a district in the State of Bihar in India. The district derives its name from its headquarters town of the smae name. It is spread over an area of 1884 sq km and is located between 25.20 and 26.30 degrees north latitudes, and 87.7 and 88.19 degrees east longitudes. It is surrounded by Araria district in the West, Purnia district in the south-west, Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal on the east, and Darjeeling district of West Bengal and Nepal on the north. A narrow strip of West Bengal, about 20 km wide separates it from Bangladesh.Major rivers flowing through the district are Mahananda, Kankai, Mechi, Donk, Ratua and Ramzan Sudhani.
According to census 2011, the population of the district was 1690948 with a population density is 897 per sq km. There is one subdivision named Kishanganj. It is one of the few districts where the population of Muslims is in majority.
The district, as per the census 2011, came into existence on January 10, 1990. It was earlier a subdivison of Purnea district. It consists of 7 community development blocks, viz., Terhagachh, Dighalbank, Thakurganj, Pothia, Bahadurganj, Kochadhamin and Kishanganj. Total number of Gram Panchayats are 126 which consist of 771 villages of which 732 are inhabited and 39 are uninhabited.
