La Rochelle

La Rochelle is a fortified seaport city of France, on an inlet of the Bay of Biscay, 95 miles North-West of Bordeaux. It is capital of the department of Charente-Inférieure. It has a commodious harbour, noteworthy public buildings, a fine promenade and gardens; shipbuilding, glass-works, sugar-refineries, &c., are among its chief industries.
