Ladrones

Ladrones was the former name for Mariana Islands. Jesuit missionaries changed the islands’ name from Islas de los Ladrones (Thieves’ Islands) in 1668 in order to honour Mariana of Austria, then regent of Spain. It is a well-watered, thickly-wooded group in the North Pacific, 1400 miles East of the Philippines and once belonged to Spain but now under U.S. jurisdiction. It produce cotton, indigo, and sugar, but the trade is of little worth. The only town is San Ignazio de Agaña, on the largest island, Guam.
