Laura Bassi

Laura Bassi (1711-78) was an Italian physicist and professor, the first woman to pursue a scientific career for which she was paid a salary. She was born in Bologna, and became a professor at the University of Bologna after receiving her college degree. She taught physics, mathematics, and philosophy. She performed experiments at home, and gave private instructions in physics.
