Lohit district

Lohit is a district in the State of Arunachal Pradesh in India. It lies approximately between the latitudes 27° 33' - 29° 22'N and the Longitude 95°15' E - 97° 24'E. It is bounded on North by China and part of Dibang Valley District of Arunachal pradesh, on South by Changlang District of Arunachal Pradesh, on the East by China and Burma and on the West by Assam state and a part of Dibang Valley District.

The district has an area of 5,212 sq km. Population of the district as per census 2011 was 145,538. Tezu is the headquarters town of the district.

The district derives its name from the nearby river of the same name. The Lohit river rises from the eastern Tibet and enters India in Kibithoo area of the Lohit district. In the ancient Indian literature the river is called 'Lauhitya' a name that is associated with the legends of Parasuram which referred in Srimad Bhagavat, Kalikapurana and in the Mahabharata.

In 1980 Lohit district was carved out and Dibang Valley district with its headquarters at ANINI. Again by another bifurcation of Lohit, Anjaw district with its headquarters at HAWAI was created in December 2003.
